    Song Road is a folk/celtic/world recording produced by fiddle wizard and multi-instrumentalist Jaron Freeman-Fox the protege of Teresa’s long time producer the late Oliver Schroer. Teresa is a seasoned performer with years of vocal exploration under her belt. Jaron is a young, exciting, fearless inventor.Together they’ve created a sonic road trip for the musical adventurer.

    “The songs were inspired by my travels and conversations with campesinos in Mexico, working and singing with farm women in the fields of Kenya, smoking salmon on the Yukon River and lazing on the beach in Cuba. Jaron and I share an interest in Celtic tunes, Gaelic aires, East Indian music and latin grooves. He was able to capture my curiosity about how other cultures use their voices while keeping firm footing in the songs and stories of my native Prince Edward Island, Canada.”

Teresa credit's story teller Lorne Johnston for this incredible account of weather shaman Maggie Lachlin Gillis. Anyone who could predict big storms and save fisherman's' lives was both feared and revered in island communities. Lorne was a lobster fisherman and pilot for rum-running vessels during prohibition. He was in his teens when these events occurred in Clear Springs Harbour on the north side of Prince Edward Island.

Maggie Lachlin Gillis love her pipe.
She'd smoke it on the back porch of her place above the harbour
Drinking black tea and molasses from the Co-op in Bear River.

Long widowed and forgotten and alone.
When lobster season came she'd wander back down to the harbour
Trading stories at the cookhouse, reading tea leaves for young lovers.

Maggie Lachlin Gillis had the sight.
Like her Grandaddy before her she had the gift to read the water.
She could feel a storm a-comin,' give all the sailors warning.

Chorus:
She heard the birds cry, and the seas crash
And the winds roar, and the waves lash
And the cold seas, and the high tide
And the fierce wind from the cruel eye
Of the storm.

Maggie's Granddad foresaw the Yankee Gale.
A thousand sailors perished, but not a man in Clear Springs Harbour
Put an oar into the water, after Lachlin gave the warning.

He heard the birds cry, and the seas crash
And the winds roar, and the waves lash
And the cold seas, and the high tide
And the fierce wind from the cruel eye
Of the storm.

Harvest moon 1923.
Boats on blocks for winter, Maggie Lachlin had a vision
Saw all the boats in Clear Springs piled up at the bridge a good mile inland.
And folks said, “Maggie Lachlin's lost her mind.”
But when the gale roared up the Clear Springs Brook
It pushed every boat, and line and hook,
Piled them a mile from the shore, at the bridge, way up at the highway.

She heard the birds cry, and the seas crash
And the winds roar, and the waves lash
And the cold seas, and the high tide
And the fierce wind from the cruel eye......of the storm.

My father loved fiddle music but never owned an instrument. He like to 'jig' fiddle tunes. This form of mouth music has all but disappeared. Dad would often trade tunes with local fiddlers around the kitchen table when I was growing up. Jimmy also loved a slow aire. He was passionate about farming and wanted to leave the land in better shape than he found it. This tribute to my father combines a bit of mouth music and a slow aire.

I like to get up in the morning
See the cows out on the hay
Watch the sun rise in the meadow
Welcome the gifts of the day.

I like to walk out in the evening
The kids and the dogs at my heels
Check on the cows in the meadow
Look over the crops in the fields.

At the end of the day I take pleasure
In all of the chores I have done
A fine piece of land is a treasure
I'm glad to call this one my own.
